Background of the Study

A festival is a manifestation of the culture of a certain group of people within a community, and it typically has complex social, economic, and cultural values. Local festivals are now widely recognized as a significant resource for the tourist industry, a key component in the culture of many different cultures, and an inevitable part of the heritage of many different nations (Kuude, Adongo and Abanga, 2010). The researcher made the observation that today, while people get up somewhere else or go to bed somewhere else, throughout specific time frames of the year, in cities, towns, and villages, people would be celebrating a festival or celebration of some type. This observation was made today. In Nigeria, there are several festivals, some of which date back to a time before the introduction of the main faiths to this multiethnic and culturally varied culture (Mathias, 2014). In addition, it was stated that festivals in Nigeria may be divided into four distinct festivals: those celebrating music, cinema and cultural; Christians; Muslims; and Christians and Muslims together. The celebration of cultural festivals such as the Argungu fishing festival (Kebbi State, North western Nigeria), Calabar Carnival (Cross River State), and Carniriv (River State), to name a few, is hailed as a unifying force that connects people of different races and backgrounds together. This is particularly important. This is due to the fact that, in most situations, the celebration of these cultural events brings people back to their history. It is considered to be heritage resources that contribute to the formation of social cohesiveness. The observance of cultural festivals serves as a motor that propels a community's economy through the economic advantages that are derived from those celebrations, particularly during the celebration season (Hackbert, 2009). The researcher made the observation that fishing festivals along with other types of special events give a growing number of towns and other types of recreational settings around the nation with entertainment that is exciting, entertaining, and cultural in art, culture, and heritage. For instance, every year since 2006, the city of Calabar has hosted the Calabar Carnival. This festival has a procession, band contests, sales of regional food, and many forms of cultural dancing. This provides an explanation for why it has been referred to as Nigeria's most massive street celebration (The Report: Nigeria 2010). In a similar line, Carniriv, pronounced "Car-nee-rev," is a festival that takes place once a year in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A few weeks before Christmas, the Carnival begins, and it continues for a total of seven days. During this period, a number of different ceremonial activities take place, the most of which having some sort of cultural or religious importance (Okachi, 2015). As a result, the purpose of this study is to investigate the social and economic impact that the fishing festival has had on the development of Etsako central Local Government Area in Edo state.

Statement of the Problem

The reason for commemorating a festival is also highly important, particularly because it sheds light on the aspects of the culture from which it originated. However, fishing festivals in Etsako Local Government Area (LGA) face a number of challenges, some of which include the need to ensure funding, maintenance, which refers to the continuous protective care of a place (including elements, objects, spaces, and views), and its preservation in its existing state. It has previously been acknowledged that these challenges exist (Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter, 2013). As a result, the protection and upkeep of locations of historical or cultural significance may be regarded to be a significant component of the celebration of fishing festivals. As a consequence of this, the government of Nigeria has established a Cultural Policy or mechanism with the intention of preserving and fostering the rich variety of the country's cultural manifestations. As a result, the purpose of this study is to investigate the social and economic impact that the fishing festival has had on the development of Etsako Central Local Government Area in Edo State.
